Dale Earnhardt, Jr. was born in Kannapolis, NC, the son of racing legend Dale Earnhardt. In 1991 he began to race professionally in the Street Stock division at Motorsport Park, Concord, NC, driving a 1978 Monte Carlo he owned with his older brother Kerry. Years of experience under the guidance of his father led Earnhardt Jr. to his first Busch Series race in 1996 at Myrtle Beach in which he achieved a 14th place finish. Earnhardt Jr. took consecutive victories in the Busch Series in both 1998 and 1999. The following year he would win his first Winston Cup race at Texas Motor Speedway. Also in 200, Earnhardt Jr. made history as the first rookie to win The Winston event at Lowe's Motor Speedway. These wins qualified him to drive in the 2001 Budweiser Shootout and The Winston. Dale Earnhardt, Jr. chose 8 for his car's racing number, the same number used by his grandfather, Ralph Earnhardt.
