Barbie is a fashion doll manufactured by the American toy-company Mattel, Inc. and launched in March 1959. American businesswoman Ruth Handler is credited with the creation of the doll using a German doll called Bild Lilli as her inspiration.  Ruth saw her daughter playing with paper dolls pretending they were students, cheerleaders and career women.  This inspired her to create a three dimensional doll.  Her first outfit was the funky black and white swim suit and her hair was in a pony tail.  Barbie was born in the fictional town of Willows,  Wisconsin.  Barbie's biggest collector is a woman in Germany who has over 15,000 different barbie types.  Needless to say she is listed in the Guiness Book of World Records for the larest collection.  Barbie has had over 150 careers in the last decade ranging from astronate to a doctor to a business executive.  Barbie is still very popular with one doll sold every three minutes in the world.

Collector Notes:

Barbie made her debut at the 1959 American Toy Fair in New York city.  She was designed by Ruth and Elliot Handler founders of Mattel.  Barbie received mixed reviews at first, as she was like no other doll produced before.  The public grew to love her and from 1960 on her popularity grew.  Two of Barbie's most favored attractions were her different hair colors and styles and her ever increasing popular modern outfits.  Read more:  Millers Collectibles Price Guide
